Panarea is the smallest and lower island in the Aeolian Isles (Timpone del Corvo, the highest point, is only 412 m upon sea level).
With Basiluzzo, Spinazzola, Lisca Bianca, Dattilo, Bottaro, Lisca nera, the Panarelli and the Formiche it's part of a small archipelago between Lipari and Stromboli
The Mediterranean maquis in Panarea shows plenty of prickly pears, agaves, brooms, capers and several ancient olive trees.
Its crystalline waters have manifold colours. The most impressive location on the island is Cala Junco bay, the southern point of Panarea. It is a charming beach enclosed by volcanic reefs; from here tourist can climb to the prehistoric village. The houses are grouped in three villages: San Pietro, Ditella and Drautto. The main road goes from north to south and cannot be travelled by car: it passes through the houses and offers panoramic views of the rocks in front of the island and of Stromboli. There are no camping places and free camping is not allowed. The small paths and mule-tracks, marked by lentisk, capers and myrtle, lead up to the summit of the Timpone del Corvo, where the incredible panoramic view reaches the whole archipelago.
Small motor-boats can be rent directly form the island’s fishermen to explore the wonderful Cala Junco bay or the other islets of this small archipelago. A small sand beach can be reaches on foot (20 min walk from the harbour) or by the Ape-taxi service.
There are NO banks, but a few BANCOMAT are available on the island.
